Mike is seated in the only empty spot of the living room floor. Around him sit his comicbook collection. Reading and cleaning. Cleaning and reading. It's the only way to spend an afternoon.
Mel doesn't even knock, just pushes the door open to let herself and Stampy in. They've been going for what, from the way Stampy heads straight for her water bowl, has been a good long walk.
One of them picks her way moderately carefully through the comics to sit down behind him brushing his side gently. The other bounds through them to throw herself into his lap.
Guess which is which?
"We're good," Mel says. "Had a nice long walk out by the lake."
"Ooof! Clearly not long enough. Hello Stampy. Heel Stampy. HEEL!"
Ninja or not, trying to fend off an excited elephant of any size is a challenge. Somehow or another he manages to get Stampy into a stationary, and comfortable position.
"The reduced sugar was supposed to make her less hyper. I just don't get it. Here, let me clear you a spot."
With careful hands he scoops up levels of comics, and suddenly where there was a carpet of colored newsprint, there is floor.
"I guess I just have an invigorating effect on women. It's a curse, you know."
He turns and gives her a smooch on the cheek.
"They go. They....well, I'm trying to figure out if I should put them in order by publisher, or by title, or by release date, or even by story arch. And then, there's the whole business of those."
Mike points to a small box of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics.
"They've got to be organized. I mean, what if I need one right away and can't find it? It would be a crises if biblical proportions. Cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!"
Mike looks up and over at the now retreating box.
"They're actually an interesting read. If you want, feel free."
The thing about quoting pop culture at someone who's from the wrong century, even if she can tell from the voice he was quoting, is that she hears every line for the first time.
And it's a funny line, so Mel laughs appreciatively. Mike's so witty sometimes.
"You sure?" she asks, "Has it all already happened to you?"
"Um...I think so? It's not complete, and they're sort of old...and the time line is sort of skewed. It's wierd. Much better than the cartoon though. That, that was just bad, and you know how much I love cartoons."
"Nah. I made eyecontact with him the other day and he didn't run screaming or implode, so I have to figure that he doesn't have the room wired for video or sound."
Mike likes the squirming, he might just poke her again for fun.
"After much deliberation and introspection into your request, I have concluded that it is acceptable for you to point out how adorable I was as a baby."
She shuffles closer to him, nestling into the warmth under his arm, before turning and kissing him briefly.
"You were an adorable baby turtle," she says.
Now she's flicking through the comics again, looking for some sort of sign of violence between the brothers, while keeping up the facade of interested curiosity.
Oooh, kisses are nice too. Today is a good day. Much better than those other days. Bad other days, no biscuit.
"Damn straight I was. Though, I do have to point out that all baby turtles are really cute. There was this one time in NoHo where we kind of found a whole nest of hatchlings just swimming around."
Mike cringes towards the end of the story. The memories it brings up aren't all pleasent.
As for the comicbooks. There are pranks and sparring matches galore, but nothing overtly violent between brothers. Well, unless she happens to check the oversized, bright red comic entitled Raphael.
"Sort of a not so good story that comes from that. Leo, Don and me were steamed at Raph and played a prank on him. He's not real fond of leeches, so we put on one his foot.
It was a bad scene. The leach got all the mutagen from his system, and Raph slowly turned back into a normal turtle.

She pulls the box nearer to see what they are, and her eyes go wide as she realises, hastily pushing them away.
"Egh. I wouldn't do anything with them."

There's four of them, she notices. Four baby turtles. Four grown versions.

"You got him back, though."
Now Mel reaches for the Raphael comic, casually, listening more to Mieky than paying attention to what she's reading.
